Lenie ’t Hart started her shelter for sick and orphaned baby seals in 1971 with nothing but a small bathtub in her backyard. She coined the word ‘zeehondencreche’ (seal kindergarten) and worked with scientists to set up a research institute to understand the problems at hand. As an avid believer of the need to collaborate with residents, governments, NGO and large corporations to make an impact, Lenie also worked closely with oil companies and ITOPF to set up Sea Alarm foundation that have a joint program to fight oil spills. Lenie is still active as founder of the Lenie ’t Hart Seal Fund that supports individuals and organisations globally that are active saving seals.
